finally, it feels so good to work on a new post!
it's been a while, so I may be a little rusty.
but i'm back and I have tons of new albums to review. I just hope I'll have the time to write them all.
this latest post will contain a review of a very special album, which is a result of an interesting collaboration between Danger Mouse (see my vaporize post), Sparklehorse (the band led by the late singer Mark Linkous, who comitted suicide on March 6, 2010) and another interesting artist, David Lynch (known as the creator of the television series Twin Peaks).
this amazing album features artists like James Mercer of The Shins, The Flaming Lips, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Iggy Pop, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy, Frank Black of The Pixies, the late folk singer Vic Chesnutt, David Lynch and other great artists. seing as all of these singers had a part to play in the creation of the tracks, the result is a complex album with various styles which bind together perfectly to create one original and mindblowing album.
due to some legal disputes between Danger Mouse and EMI, the album was released later than planned, still, I'm thrilled that they managed to release it.
another interesting thing about this album is that David Lynch created a 100 page book with photos that are said to be the graphic visualisation of the music on the album. unfortunately, only 5000 copies of the book were released, and I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds very intriguing.
the overall feel of the album is strange, psychedelic and surreal, no wonder David Lynch got involved and created a photo book to help visualize the music, because, as others have stated, the album gives a weird thrill and sensation of melancholy, similar to a David Lynch film.
it's a real masterpiece!> laura recommends:
1. Revenge (feat. The Flaming Lips)
2. Everytime I'm with you (feat. Jason Lytle)
3. Little girl (feat. Julian Casablancas)
4. Insane lullaby (feat. James Mercer)
5. Grim augury (feat. Vic Chesnutt)
6. Dark night of the soul (feat. David Lynch)
these are the tracks on the album which have had a strong impact on me, but the whole album is made up of one amazing track after another, creating one of the best albums I've listened to in a while, a long while.
it's hard to describe in words what makes each track stand out. the complex and gloomy instrumentals combined with the voices of the great artists that are featured here, makes each track have it's own personality, yet together, they participate in generating a thrilling and dark atmosphere that makes this album so special.
the first two tracks posted are heartbreakingly beautiful, with lyrics that can tear you up inside, though each is expressing somewhat opposite feelings.
little girl is the only track on this album that gives it a certain spark of dynamic, active, might I say danceable sound, with its repetitive guitar riffs and percussion, accompanied by the voice of Julian Casablancas which gives the track a positive spin, although the lyrics state the opposite.
James Mercer's voice, mixed with a noisy indefinite background of instrumentals is what gives Insane lullaby its character, also the string segments build up and aid the song and give different sound patterns along the track.
grim augury is one of the best tracks on the album, a dark and disturbed tale with surreal passages of life. from the very beginning when the bells start to play, the gloomy atmosphere of the track is set. the lyrics are the key component to the overall mood of the track, and the lyrical performance of the late Vic Chesnutt makes them even more grim.
the perfect ending to this album, the track dark night of the soul, with the special vocal performance from David Lynch himself, comes right after grim augury, adding even more emotional depth to the track and to the whole album. it's like a troubling conclusion to the whole tracklist.
all in all, this album can get to you, can be a wee bit depressing, but if you focus on the definite quality of the musical journey it takes you on, you won't be affected by its darkness, but learn to appreciate one true masterpiece!
